Has anyone tried MSM?
Question:
I take it in combination with glucosamine. I’m a distance runner, and it seems to have eliminated the knee pains I would sometimes get after long runs. But, again, that may be the glucosamine.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have heard people at the gym discussing the benefits of this, pain relief, allergies relieved, skin, nail and hair inprovement benefits, energizer, etc. I’d like to try it but would like to know more. Did some research on the internet but am still curious for more info.

I use it with glucosamine for a very bad knee – it may just be the glucosamine that helps, but the MSM is included in there, and since they work, I’m not trying glucosamine alone to see if the MSM is really doing anything. We also have an elderly arthiritic dog on the same pills and they help her a lot. Liz 5′8" 215/192/135 lc started: Jul 9 ‘02

The ad claims seem quite silly. I think (?) MSM is what DMSO breaks down into. Thus it’s an oral, no icky smell/taste, version of DMSO. -kathy

MSM has been used in veterinary medicine for years, especially for horses. In my experience with various horses, it helps some and not others. So the usual YMMV. With my old horse I lost this summer, towards the end adding MSM definitely enhanced the effectiveness of the NSAID’s to help reduce his pain from a malignant bone tumor on his front leg. My vet recommends it for certain conditions, like epiphysitis in foals. For myself and some friends, we seem to feel some relief from allergies–not scientifically documented and could be placebo. I’ve seen some quasi-scientific studies (I remember a couple having too few animals) on MSM but can’t remember any references it’s been so long.

Wheeler, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Louisville School of Medicine. (ad claims were from http://www.naturalways.com/MSM.htm) Claim: MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane) Nutritional support for inter-cellular health MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane) is a natural form of organic sulfur found in the flexible bond between your cells. Comment: MSM is not a natural component of anything in the body (it might be a minor waste product of some degradative pathways of sulfur-containing compounds). The writer here is probably thinking of glycosaminoglycans, found in the extracellular matrix and containing sulfate groups (not MSM). Claim: With a shortage of MSM, cell connections become rigid, and problems can develop throughout your body. MSM is an extraordinary dietary supplement that is amazing researchers because of its remarkable benefits for a huge range of health problems including allergies, arthritis, gastro-intestinal problems, acid stomach, muscle and joint pains, lung problems, and more. Comment: The sulfur-containing amino acids are the only important sources of dietary sulfur. MSM is not known to make any significant contribution to human nutrition. No health benefits have been documented. Claim: Sulfur is one of the five basic elements of life. It is present in all living organisms. To perform properly and efficiently, our bodies need a constant intake of easily available sulphur. Comment: Yes, we need sulfur, but not MSM. Claim: MSM is a natural compound of many foods, including fresh fruits, seafood, meat, vegetables (onions, garlic, asparagus, cabbage, broccoli, red peppers, brussels sprouts) green foods and certain algae, grains, milk and eggs. However, when foods are processed, heated or dried, the essential MSM is readily lost. Food preparation like washing and steaming will reduce the levels of MSM. People who eat a lot of fast food get very little sulfur because it is destroyed during preparation. Studies also show that the level of MSM in the body drops with increasing age. These same studies show that almost everyone is deficient. Comment: I’m not sure what these studies are, since MSM is not known to play any role in human metabolism. — "There’s a seeker born every minute."

I think I’ve tried everything. Some people swear by MSM but I took it for about a week and noticed roughly a five percent increase in my intake of Pills that Do Nothing. c And the bottle was decorative addition to the local landfill
I wouldn’t expect any noticeable effects from MSM within a week, at least for arthritis. I’d consider a month more realistic. I’m not sure there’s anything to all those other supposed benefits the original poster mentioned. It’s probably "worth a try" for arthritis sufferers though. -kathy

I recently tried it for about a month for my fibromyalgia — I couldn’t detect any discernible difference in how I feel. However —- I have been taking SAM-e for years now and it has helped considerably — as a matter of fact there are scientific studies done in Europe that point to its efficacy in treating fibromyalgia and pain from osteoarthritis, etc. Occasionally I think that maybe I don’t really need it anymore and drop it — only to discover after a few days that my neck hurts more and I’m having more trouble getting comfortable at night and am more achy and sore — so I go right back on it. Evidently it is tricky to produce properly so right now the Italian labs are making the best product — Nature Made — is one of the good ones that is usually readily available. Hope this helps! lysychka
