In article <6o3425$v5…@nnrp1.dejanews.com>, dios…@iscweb.com wrote: <Doctors have this stupid notion that IBS is caused by the emotions and mind.> While I agree that doctors are nuts if they think that IBS is strictly psychological, most people I’ve chatted with about IBS agree that there is definitely a psychological component to the syndrome. Stress, and periods of intense emotion bring on flare ups in lots of folks. To say that the emotional component of IBS is ’stupid’ is off base. Most likely the syndrome is a combination of emotional and physical factors which predispose people to the syndrome. I’ve read that the colon is very tightly tied into the nervous system, so it makes sense that periods of stress would trigger IBS symptoms. Most current research, as I understand it, focuses on blocking, or controlling, motor responses of the colon brought on by nervous system responses. For those of you who fail to believe that there is ANY relation to emotions and state of mind… chat with other folks with the disease. A while back, some folks were commenting on how the affects of alcohol, and other depressants, tends to diminish the IBS effects. To me… this is indicative of the fact that IBS symptoms are most likely impacted by nervous system activities.

I have used Ginger for years to help with nausea, and it does wonders. I now do quite a bit of boating, and am prone to motion sickness, and still keep my Ginger around. I found "Crystallized Ginger" at the grocery store. It has the consistency of dried fruit. I cut it up into little strips (1/8" x 1/8" x 1") and take it when needed. The product is imported by: Frieda’s Inc PO Box 58488 Los Angeles, CA 90058 (800) 241-1771 frei…@aol.com It is mixed with a little sugar, which I personally like. To be effective, it must be taken before you actually feel sick. It doesn’t take very much, maybe a strip or two as described above. There is one side effect that you may like, when it wears off after an hour or so, you’ll be very hungry. Both my wife and I use Ginger religiously, and I even give it to my dog now, since she gets motion sickness on the boat to. For years I suffered with nausea and vomiting almost every time I ate. It ended up being a reflux problem, but I never had the heartburn symptoms. I went to see a few doctors, and they kept doing test, and trying different drugs that didn’t work, or worse made me feel worse. I finally found a Gastrointerologist that new exactly what my problem was on my first visit. He confirmed the reflux problem with an EDG (Scope down the throat) and put me on 30mg Provacid. 3 weeks later the symptoms were almost gone. I had been on Prilosec a few times (similar to Provacid), but never got any results, and had other side effects which forced me to give up the Prilosec. I used to feel good about 1 day per month, and now feel bad maybe 1 day every 3 months. What a change. I’ve been on Provacid for 3 years now. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -dios…@iscweb.com wrote in message <6o3425$v5…@nnrp1.dejanews.com>… >Also, I DO find powdered ginger in capsules to help, although it >sounded suspect to me after so little worked. Ah yes this is interesting. The discussion you mention must’ve taken place before I started reading this group (approx a month), but I too have noticed that I actually feel BETTER after a few drinks. Not that I’m making an argument for alcoholism as a cure for ibs, but really, it seems to help. I thought the relief could be due to some sort of relaxing of the stomach/intestines, but the nervous system tie in seems valid as well. -j – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> A while back, some folks were commenting on how the affects of alcohol, > and other depressants, tends to diminish the IBS effects. Hi Mark, I’ve been diagnosed as having IBS for almost 9 years. It comes and goes, stress seems to be a factor that brings it on for me. I have two doctors – one prescribes anti-spasmodic drugs which don’t seem to do anything much and the other prescribes anti-depressants. For me the anti-depressants work – I’m not a depressed person at all, I just get too involved and uptight about things which I guess has an effect on my stomach – however, I prefer not to take them. The upshot is, if I don’t take anti-depressants, I get ill and if I do take them, I feel wierd about taking mind altering drugs. I work in the pharmaceutical field and hear that a few drug companies have IBS drugs in trials – this may be our hope. Don’t be daft and think that you’re alone, just take a look at the number of messages in this group. The think that brings us together is that we all suffer. What’s different about us is that we all need different treatment and it’s this that makes IBS so difficult for doctors to take seriously. Dear friends, Can anyone of you tell me of a similar situation. I now have IBS for almost 2 years. It has eased slightly since it first began. Initially my doc diagnosed IBS, and after seeing a specialist I was diagnosed with the term "foregut motility disorder". The doc told me the two term are very similar. My symptoms seemed to start out of the blue one day on holidays in Spain. I became extremely nausea and felt real ill. When i came back from my holiday my doc. saw me and diagnosed IBS. My symptoms were and are , constant nausea, lack of appetite, wind, discomfort , bloatedness, and gurgling noises. My doc prescribed almost all types of drug used for this problem( except Anti depressants)and nothing helped. At this stage i became real worried and eventually was seen by a specialit. he preformed some test and then told me there was nothing seriously wrong except (" forgut dismotility disorder, which aint anything to worry about ha, ha.!!). Anyway the funny part was when the specialist prescribed the same drugs as the doc i almost cried. i told him that they had no effect. So his reponse was for me not to take anything except get on with life( which is so hard when you fell so ill). It has been suggested for me to try Anti depressants, but i just fail to see how these could help a sensation comming from my stomach. Anyway thing have seemed to improve a little and the symptoms have eased( about time after 2 yeasr) I was just wondering if anyone else suffers from a contant type nausea, lack of appetite, bloated, burping, wind and gurgling noises. If any one know if Anti Depressant would work on this type of symptoms , i love to hear. I feel very isolated as if nobody is suffering the same way i have been PS: have you heared of that term "upper foregut dismotility disorder"( what a name!!) I loved to hear form any responses Regards mark

Hi, I don’t have IBS (although my sister does, so I know a little about the subject) but I have suffered week to month long bouts with nausea and vomiting, nonstop, and know how much it can effect your life. They gave me Tigan for it and that didn’t work. Also, when I was pregnant, I thought I would have to be hospitalized. I’ve tried a lot of things. Funny though, how the nausea will come for so long and then ease. At one point it got really severe, and I also had a lot of pains, and was throwing up bright red blood, no appetite. This lasted several months, and the doctor kept saying it was nothing, stress, whatever, ulcers maybe, finally, ten months later I wound up at a tropical disease specialist in NYC (never mind that I’d not been to the tropics), Dr. Cahill, who instantly figured out I had subacute chronic e. coli infection, and treated me with ten days doxycycline, which made me sicker, but after the course I felt WAY BETTER. I also got pseudomonas in the hospital, and that made me sick. Now I am nauseated again, and don’t know why. I also have been on antid’s, and they don’t do anything for nausea!!! Not much does. Pursue the cause. I just drink a ton of chilled water, eat mainly fruit and cottage cheese, some toast, and don’t even bother with pepto or antacids. Also, I DO find powdered ginger in capsules to help, although it sounded suspect to me after so little worked. But I have to take about a tsp. total of ginger. Capsule it myself. Cheap too. Health food store. If you haven’t had "the full diagnosis" like with a colonoscopy and all that unpleasantness, and seen a TOP specialist, you should. You were visiting a foreign country. Some of these infections can be tricky to diagnose, and can be chronic. I know how incapacitating being nauseous is! Ask any pregnant woman!!! My mother was hospitalized for nausea during pregnancy and put on IV drugs. When you are queasy, anything other then laying on the bed cursing is a real chore. Thank Goodness for me it comes maybe once a year for a while and then goes. I wish you luck. Watch your diet (the old tired refrain…) and you can try the antidep’s, but I know some of them MADE me sicker. Maybe they think the root of your problem is psychological. Doctors have this stupid notion that IBS is caused by the emotions and mind. They prescribe antidep’s for all sorts of psychosomatic diseases, ie. cramps, backpain, headaches, chronic pain, etc… and I really don’t think they do much (although if you’re lucky they might boost your mood…) Sakina In article <6o11jq$u…@scotty.tinet.ie>, "cooldude" <mpquig…@tinet.ie> wrote: – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Dear friends, > Can anyone of you tell me of a similar situation.
