? on recovery from piriformis injury

Categories: Chronic Pain Syndrome

Question:

Peggy, I had Piriformis Syndrome for almost 5 years. What I eventually found as the source of my chronic pain was a misalignment of my pelvis. I went to a chiropractor (who was once a very good college runner at Stanford) who speculated  my pelvic misalignment was caused by years of running on crowned roads and uneven surfaces. After several visit, and stretching, I have been pain free. Some stretches I have used are illustrated in this website http://riceinfo.rice.edu/~jenky/injury.html Good luck, Paul – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – a question for you who have had a piriformis muscle injury:   how long was your recovery?   also, if you had physical therapy (i’m starting monday), what did it involve?    i’ll be very appreciative for your help/learning how it might go. peggy

One of my training partners just got diagnosed with a torn pirformis. How long will recovery take?  What can he do to hasten recovery? Presently he’s riding a bike with us everyday and he bought a new odometer.  It’s driving me crazy, because we hear how slow we are actually running.  I wouldn’t have it any other way, though it would be nice to have him running with us again.  He still shows up every day and Troy

Response:

I understand that there are many variations of piriformis syndrome, depending on how the nerve is compressed or entrapped. I formerly had piriformis that would appear only after 30 miles in an ultra, whereupon I would have severe butt pain and my right leg would go numb, forcing me to walk only. I was able to completely "cure" this by doing lower-body weight work at the gym. Specifically, I used the slant leg-press machine. I’ve described my weight routine in the article referenced in my signature, below. Good luck! — George Beinhorn "How to Run Your First 50-Miler" http://www.oceansofenergy.com
