Really weird feeling in knee… ?

Categories: Back Pain

Question:

I had that feeling several times when my knee was the size of a canteloupe.  It was weird, thats for sure.  For me it was almost like something had burst inside and liquid was running down your leg (grin – geesh, that sounds like I had an "accident").  I never did find out what it was. I told my RA about it, but he said it was something he could not explain. Mine would just happen for no particular "similar" reason.  What about yours? The times it happens, are you doing anything the same each time?  Curious. tanya TACHANKA SIBERIANS "All Four Paws Rolling" Wenatchee, WA

Response:

The first time it happened, I thought "hey great, the fluid has decided to drain!"  (and go where? lol)    It has just happened once today and once yesterday….   Just walking along at a leisurely pace (as if I could go any faster than that) and I get the ‘cold leaky feeling’.   I probably shouldn’t be walking as far as I am, being in flare mode and all.  Just don’t want to sit home, seize up and then really not be able to walk.  I must mention this to my new rhuematologist, when I do get one.  I’ve had the grinding, which my old rhuemy contributed to crepitus. Does it hurt for you?  You compared it to something bursting, which to me sounds painful  :o)   My calf is a bit tight, but I know it’s from walking. I’m probably just doing too much when I should be taking it easy, but it’s so nice outside! Nicole G — To reply, remove the obvious….  No matter what they tell ya  ;o)

don’t know what a Baker’s cyst is…  I’ll go look it up… Would I be able to know if I have something like that?  I mean, could I feel it? I have Baker’s Cysts on both knees and didn’t know it until the surgeon pointed them out. ~Krissy

What it is, is a build up of fluid behind the knee, it has many causes. Mine happened to be from my TKR.     I had felt the swelling back there, but as the surgery was fairly new I expected swelling. It didn’t really bother me too much at first. It wasn’t until I started really active PT, when it started to hurt, and kept my range of motion down. I just couldn’t get my knee to bend even tho the joint itself felt better. The pain from the cyst got really bad at times, but only with strenuous PT.     My ortho told me it would go away on it’s own, tho I remember begging him to stick a needle in and drain it, right there in his office. <G He told me it would be really painful to drain, but to me, the pain of the cyst was so bad it didn’t matter. Of course, all that is long gone now, thankfully.     I would imagine IF you have had one, and weren’t doing anything like I was….post op major PT, it wouldn’t be as noticeable.     I’d ask the doc next time you’re in, just in case. They’re nothing to worry about, except for the discomfort, so don’t panic. Just may be an explanation of what you’re dealing with. :) All the best, MaryBeth

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – And I mean, really weird! Hi all, I’ve just got a little question…  Wondering if anybody else has experienced this. I’ve had a pretty swollen knee for about a month now.  Yup, been to the doctor  :o)  I’ve just moved so I have to wait for my doctor to contact a rhuematologist for me, and then wait for them to get me in.  The doctor and I decided I should go back on my plaquenil, which I was recently weaned off of, wondering if that’s what may have contributed to the flare… Besides the stress of moving.   Anyway, that’s what’s been going on with my knee, so my question… I’ve noticed a strange feeling when I’m walking.  Happened once yesterday and once today.  My left knee is the swollen, fluid filled one, and all of a sudden, an icy cold wash takes over from the back of my knee, midway down my calf.  Feels like cold water on the back of my leg, but on the inside.  It doesn’t hurt, so I don’t think it’s anything really serious (but I’m not a doctor)  just… weird!  Anybody else experience this?  Or am I just a freak?  ;o) Thanks for any replies, Nicole G — To reply, remove the obvious….  No matter what they tell ya  ;o)

Helloo….  Well, I’m 24, and nope, no back pain at all, have never had any problems with my back anyway.  My rheumy always asks me, as if I should be having problems with it  :o)   But I guess he’s just being thorough.  I took it easy yesterday, but I have to walk to the drug store this afternoon to pick up my plaquenil…  See it my knee freaks out again!     Just a thought, probably off the mark, but……     After my TKR, I developed a Baker’s cyst behind my knee. Every once in awhile it would rupture, and the fluid would literally run down the back of the inside of my calf.     Have you had any lumps behind the knee? MaryBeth <hoping whatever it is, goes away soon :)

Hmmm, I don’t know what a Baker’s cyst is…  I’ll go look it up… Would I be able to know if I have something like that?  I mean, could I feel it?  I haven’t had the cold watery feeling for about a week now, but I’ve also been taking it easy the last couple days.  It’ll be something I’ll mention to my RD!  *I hope the referral period isn’t too long* Nicole G — To reply, remove the obvious….  No matter what they tell ya  ;o)
