Most people suffer from this common problem although the discrepancy is so little that it rarely causes many problems. When considering and diagnosing a lef leg inequality it is important to take into account whether it is anatomical or functional. An anatomical inequality is usually diagnosed by observation or x-ray, llying on a couch with your legs not bearing weight a discrepancy will be observed in the physical dimensions of your bones. A functional leg length inequality is different in that when you are not bearing weight on your legs they are obeserved to be equal lengths, or very close to it. However when you place weight on your legs one foot may pronate more that the other or you may have some sort of equnius condition (rigidity in foot caused by either muscle or bone), this has the effect of causing mal-alignment in the lower body which can lead to a variety of injuries. Functional leg inequalities can often be cured though through the use of orthotics in the shoes and pelvic relalignment (if necessary) from a qualified sports physician. my chiropractor said *everyone* has one leg shorter than the other. a little back crack in the right places fixes it right up.
And his income would depend on what? Diagnosing and treating leg length discrepencies? Hardly an impartial source of information I think! Tim
Response:
Leg length differences are not that uncommon. If the leg length discrepancy is 1 inch, that large difference would have been detected at an early age. In that case, corrective shoes are often prescribed. To truely diagnose a leg length discrepancy, x-rays are needed. If leg lengths appear unequal, they can be corrected if they are causing problems… i.e. unilateral hip or knee pain. The correction should be about 1/2 of the total difference and the introduction of the lift should be gradual…. walking progressing to running. My advise would be to make sure you clinician is experienced, and if they are make sure they have experience in diagnosing and treating running related pathology. The Physical Therapist
Response:
I’ve read that while leg length differences are not uncommon they are often incorrectly suspected and the only accurate way to tell for sure is with some rather expensive full leg x-rays. Tom
