Back pain after RP

Categories: Back Pain

Question:

I had my cath removed today, and Dr said no infection causing the back probs.  Simply a muscle thing, but very uncomfortable. Well now I feel like 1/2 a man, and when I’m out of the pads, I may feel like 3/4 of one!! LOL

They tell ya and tell ya and tell ya, and you still feel like half a man. I’ll add my two cents — don’t worry about it.  It aint permanent — now you can feel free to disregard me as well.  :-)

Your urologist should certainly know about urinary or kidney infections, so it does seem that your problem is common garden variety back pain, probably brought on by the inactivity associated with the surgery.  Your primary care physician or if necessary an appropriate specialist can advise you about back pain.  As I’ve noted before, I have lots of experience with back problems having had two herniated disks in 1995 which took me something like six months to recover from, and I still have recurring minor problems.  My general advice is getting as much walking in as possible, but do it at a moderate pace.  Exercises to stretch the back muscles and strengthen the abdominal muscles help a lot, but I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to do those until your incision heals after about six weeks.  Ask your doctors about it and see if you can be referred to a good physical therapist.  A physical therapist will spend a lot of time with you and identify just which exercises will do the most good.  Meanwhile ask about medication.  I find that naproxen, 500 mg taken twice daily WITH FOOD works very well, usually taking about a week or at most two to resolve any back problems.   But you would have to consult your doctor about the advisability of taking it now.  Often doctors will prescribe one of the more expensive brand name NSAIDS instead, but I find the generics work just as well, and of course they are much cheaper.  You can even buy naproxen over the counter, but I wouldn’t advise using it for extended periods of time without checking with a doctor. If you spend a lot of time sitting at a desk or computer, get the best task chair you can find.  It should have independent controls for the seat and the back.  Avoid "executive chairs" which look impressive but don’t have the same controls. — Dept. of Mathematics, Northwestern Univ., Evanston, IL 60208

Please call your doctor!!!!!You could have a kidney infection. Perhaps they need to change your antibiotic. Good Luck, Lucy

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –  I was wondering if some of the on again off again back spasms I’m having, are the passing of clotted blood pieces a week after RP?  It gets pretty intense sometimes, even with pain killers, then it’s fine for a long time. Anything is possible, but I would still bet it is common garden variety back pain associated with inactivity.  As long as it is generally getting better, don’t worry about it.   But since you have been having them for a while now, it might be worth talking to your doctor about it.    As bad as it was yesterday, it almost perect all day today!  I was also retaining water yesterday, but started voiding like Niagara all day today. Some days I get hot flashes off and on with a slight fever. It seems that all this is my body trying to regulate itself after the surgery?

I don’t remember anything like that after the first week and very little of that nature in the first week.  You should talk to your doctors about it.  I could conjecture that you have a urinary infection of some sort, but I am not a physician and even if I were it would be impossible to diagnose at long distance.  You really need to talk to your doctors about such things, both your surgeon and your primary care doctor. — Dept. of Mathematics, Northwestern Univ., Evanston, IL 60208
